Why Do We Teach? Why Are We Educators?
Hello everyone,
If you are on this blog, you must have a passion for education and becoming a teacher. Teaching is something that is not necessarily a job, but a gift. As a child, teachers or people who worked in the education field were always around me. Members of my family were teachers, reading and instructional aids, administrators, and school district administrators. Being in education for me, was something that I never wanted to do. I personally had a hard time in school academically, and felt that I did not fit in with the other students. However, I learned that if I surround myself with people who would influence me and support me, I would benefit from it tremendously. In my early twenties I went into education and almost a decade later, I have not looked back.
Teachers help create a foundation for who we become in life. The task and responsibilities are challenging, but it is rewarding to see the success of a student’s progress in their face when they are smiling. We as teachers, only want the best for our students, and our hope is that they gravitate themselves into a confident person. If you become a teacher, you must first understand that every child needs someone in their life to boost their confidence, not self-esteem but confidence. When a student comes for tutoring or may need to ask for advice in a formal way, the child must never be discouraged in asking for help. Being a teacher is not job, but a calling. You as a teacher are meant to inspire the youth.
Here is a great reading on why individuals become teachers. This site from The University of North Carolina of Chapter Hill explains the ideas and gifts of becoming a teacher. Click here to view the site.
The clip that I chose on education was on TedTalks, where Dr. Rita Pierson, a public school teacher, focuses on the perspectives of students and teachers in the classroom. Her explanations on how to approach challenging students, is something that appeals to all members in education. Dr. Pierson's fundamentals on teaching students and being an asset as a teacher, is something that provides a great source of knowledge. She invites others to think about how to make the classroom an enjoyable experience for the students through learning, and creativity. After viewing this clip, I realized as a teacher, that you can create a lesson plan where the students can learn and be inspired. Through the use of technology, my high school theology students were able to collaborate with each other on creating a PowerPoint through Google. They created multi layers of slides that had different forms a prayer that was based on the chapter. To view the assignment that my students created in groups and completed, click on this link

Robert:
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing some intimate details of your past and your current belief system relative to education. I've always felt that success in pedagogy, or anything really, was never founded upon systems or acronyms; success is rooted in people. The embedded video and your reflections within this blog are apropos of that assumption, and I think your students and the institution of education are lucky to have you. From a superficial perspective, your blog is well-written, thorough, and enjoyable. I don't see a source citing for the video, but that is a trivial aspect of an otherwise wonderful weblog.
Any job can be a gift as long as it is what we are passionate about. I am blessed that I have the job which brings me more joy throughout the day: teaching. I know others who think teaching is the worst job because it is low pay (relatively) and much bureaucracy. But I don't let those things get to me. I am thankful for all my teachers because they helped me to be who I am today. Tu-Quynh Tra.
ReplyDeleteRob,
ReplyDeleteYou presented a cohesive viewpoint on the importance of teachers.
I enjoyed watching Dr. Pierson’s video on experiences many teachers go through with their students. This is a great motivational video for teachers who think that they might want to change professions. It can make them think if there is really a purpose for the gifts they share with their students. Teachers do have a big influence on their students. Your hyperlinks provide great examples of this. Thank you for sharing.-Maribel Ruiz
Interesting topic and video. I liked how you put your own personal aspect and incorporated student work samples. The links are also very helpful to further reflect on.
ReplyDeleteI suggest you say something about those teachers who are not that passionate about their job. Something about teachers' salary and lack of academic freedom.
