Affirmation
The Dalai Lama once said, “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t
help them, at least don’t hurt them.”
Today’s generation of students live fear and in competition.
There’s a different mentality of how students think today. I
often think if this is the new norm for our children. In a competitive way
though, I have seen some students try to establish themselves by
being involved in every student organization and every sport. I’ve seen the
stress that they put themselves through, and I have seen them fail at achieving
their goals. And in that moment, I have shared their pain and sadness. I've also cried with them too.
In my profession, I have been what you would call an "ASB moderator" or "student council" moderator; whatever you decide to call it. In the past seven
years of doing student council, I have seen many students run for a class
election. Some have one, and some have lost.
It always breaks my heart when I see as student defeated, because they
feel that they have either let themselves down, or let someone else down that
is important to them in their life. There are usually about 6 to 13 students
that come and speak to me about how upset or sad they are, because of not
winning. I always tell those students, “A leader does not need a title. The
just need a heart.”
Our mission, not just as educators, but as human beings is
to help those not feel inferior of others. We must be able to help those learn
from their failures. The best thing in life is for someone to show a little
affirmation. When you show support
towards one another, you become a confidant for others who need some direction. As
teachers, we must help promote individuality, and teach our youth that it is
okay if you tried and failed. Proving that you can attempt to do something and
step out of one’s comfort zone is brave and should be recognized.
For those of who feel mediocre, I would like to inform you
that you are amazing. And I say that, because we have a purpose to bring joy to
others. So whether you’re in the classroom, or not; give a little affirmation
to those around you and make their day better.
